I’ve been saying that someday, somehow, I would make it up the giant hill on the way up to the Uplands. I live in a hilly neighborhood, but this one’s a whopper. It’s about 3/4 of a mile, with a pretty good grade. I’ve never made it to the top. But today…I did!! And it didn’t even feel that hard. I don’t know what was wrong with me, but I liked it! I kinda felt like the energizer bunny, I just kept going and going…Kim was running post-flight-of-wine, and she kept at it like a trooper. I suspect that my freakish peppiness may have been helpful, but who knows. You know how the runs go, it will be her turn to pull me along tomorrow.
I’m pretty proud of us. We did a solid run in the rain and wind and cold, and we both did it with good spirits. Isn’t that really what running and friends are about?

…over by the bikes, but you have to use the bar on top of it.” “Sounds great,” I say sunnily. After all, I usually use a 15 or 18 pound bar in class, how much of a difference can 2 pounds make?
A lot.
My legs are tired, my arms are shaky. In a good way. Guess I needed the challenge. Isn’t that the sign of a good instructor, one who pushes you just enough?
Then the kids and I headed for our Saturday morning swim/hot tub. For once, we swam, swam, swam. Natalie blew bubbles and ducked her head under and jumped and played and giggled. T floated by himself! Tummy up, chin back, told me all about the rainbow shark on the ceiling and stayed on top the water. They were swimming superstars. And I had a blast too!
Natalie just got new swim suits today. They’re so stinkin’ cute that I can’t wait to see her in them!

I dropped my daughter off at preschool and drove quickly to the gym to make my 9:30 class. Felt great, and had a couple hours with just my son afterwards. My mom and I go to the same gym, so she was there as well and came to story hour with us. Ever seen a giddy 3-year old? Picture my son reveling in the full attention of not just me, but grandma too. And no sister to share the limelight. He’s a happy kid usually, but he was over the moon!
Then we had lunch. The kid was crazy! Telling stories, jokes, giggling. It was a pretty fun afternoon. My favorite part? (Or, as my son always asks, “what was your favorite part of today, mommy?”) In the car on the way home, he started singing “On the road again. I just can’t wait to get on the road again.” A 3 year old off key rendition of John Denver. I’m still not sure where he learned it, but as my family of 5 took a 3 week vacation in the 1970s in a Volkswagen bug with only one John Denver tape for entertainment, I have my suspicions. That was a long 3 weeks.

She’s been demoted from the four mile runs. Truth be told, she’s limping a little more than we’d like and we can’t tell yet if it her paw or a touch of puppy osteoarthritis. She’s going on gentle 1 mile walks, then getting left home for the remainder of the run. (And I have to admit, just running with one puppy is so easy and fun! Kinda like spending a day with just one kid.) The good news is that the running and puppy diet did something-she can jump up into the car independently, something she didn’t do for a year. We’ll see if we’re headed for the vet in the next couple of days.
