I'm a lucky woman who loves her life. I have an amazing husband who makes me laugh and challenges me all at the same time I have two very young, bright, funny, entertaining children and a job I love as a physcial therapist. In my free time, I'm a runner (slow but sure), a hiker, a writer (at least by avocation), and a human jungle gym for my little ones. This is my third 1/2 marathon, along with a couple fulls, but my first foray back into distance running since the two back-to-back little ones. (My running partner's favorite fact about me is that my kids are 363 days apart.) It's also my first attempt at any type of blogging, and I'm basically computer illiterate, so hang in there with me.

a good run with the pups!

March 10th, 2008 by writeontherun

even if we did have to pull ellie around the library a little. kim is wise, and i stuck it out to try the run with them again. (she may also be a touch more patient than me, at least with animals! and, i suspect, small children!) we ran a bunch in sub-10 min. miles, so i’m not sure what our actual pace was, but certainly more respectable, given the “dog factor”.

the joy of nyc? i didn’t even hour shift. just went to bed at midnight and got up at 8:30. came home to a bright, normal day. scratch that. came home to daylight savings and had to run in the dark again….grrrr.

slowest run ever, thanks to puppies

March 5th, 2008 by writeontherun

We took them again. Love Kim, for her puppy patience. It was more of an agility run, dodging leashes, hopping over puppies, pulling them along (Ellie!) and trying to keep them moving. It was not a fluid, solid run. It did not, as I told Kirk, act as a nice stress reliever and quiet time. Kim suggested that we try it with them one or two more times to see if we get into a rhythm, as it’s good for them and occasionally entertaining for us. I’m more ready to throw in the dog towel and go back to walking them after I run. Nothing to do with them, really, and everything to do with me. I just don’t get the same enjoyment out of running around the pups as I do running without them, but with another human. We’ll see….

Trail running

March 2nd, 2008 by writeontherun

Mario and I headed out through the trails by his house today. Kim “called in sick” on the way, poor thing. I almost wish I had! The trails were pretty and soft and it was my first time running on them. The company was good. But…ugh…I guess every run can’t be a good one. I stuck it out, though, and at least made it past the 5 mile mark, though not gracefully or well. I did love the trails, and I’m excited to try them again when they’re dried out.

As comic relief, I came home and tried to fix our broken microwave handle. I glued my fingers together. With superglue. It comes off with nail polish remover. Sort of. And the microwave handle is still broken.

Substitute running partner II

February 28th, 2008 by writeontherun

My friend Mario’s been trying to convince me to go for a run with him for weeks, maybe months. I’ve been resistant because, as I’ve noted before, he runs like a graceful gazelle at a speed I can only dream of. But, he has a hard time either getting himself motivated to go or finding the time, can’t say that I really know which one. So yesterday, when he asked me to run early, I said, “what the heck” and said yes. It was dark. It was raining. As far as I know, Mario doesn’t like running in the dark or the rain. So I had my phone by my bed, waiting for the “ah, no, not today phone call” that never came. Sure enough, he was outside my house at 6am, ready to run (in shorts!).

There are a couple of great things about running with him. First, he’s quick, so I had to at least try and keep going at an ok pace. Second, he doesn’t make me feel bad about being slower. He seemed genuinally happy to just be running. Third, he likes long runs. Like, “hey, I had some time, so I just ran 10 miles.” We had an hour this morning, so we ran for an hour. From my door, all around town, back to my door. It felt good! Nothing like a little 6 mile jaunt to start your day.

Kim (aka, poor sicko) should be back at it on Sunday, so we’ll try for all of us to run together. Fair warning, I already got an email about the “good run this morning. Even better if we just add another mile at the same pace.” Hmmm….does this sound like I’m heading for another 1/2 marathon whether I know it or not?

Pull, sniff, rain.

February 27th, 2008 by writeontherun

That’s the order of my run. Mile 1: Ellie pulled and pulled. Backwards. Apparently not in the mood for a run today. Mile 2; She sniffed. Everything. Everything. Most annoying mile ever. Mile 3: Dropped off the dogs first. Started raining on me, making me realize that I haven’t run in the rain in ages. It’s been so nice here. It was fine, not even a hard rain, but I did get wet. Not the puppies though, they were already snoozing inside…
