Kim called after the morning cancel, craving an evening run. I met her just after bedtime (which my loving husband finished alone), dreading the evening run just a touch. It was the best run! We always joke that we would be much faster in daylight. Turns out it’s true. It was a blast and I hope we do it again as it gets light a little later still.

Kim called to cancel our run this morning. Sick kiddo. The catch? I left my phone downstairs. I did think to check it before I left, but not until after I was out of bed, dressed and awake. Really, why go back to bed at that point? Off to the gym I went. You know what? I HATE THE TREADMILL!. That was 2.6 of the slowest, hardest, hilliest, most painful miles ever. Love running outside. Hate the ‘mill. Oh well, at least I did it.

And today was perfect for it. Just a couple inches, good footing. It’s quiet and peaceful and so pretty. Muffled footfalls.
And crazy dogs!
I took the pups on the first mile, then let them off leash to run and play at the empty, empty park. I guess everybody must have been hibernating in the snow. Watching eskies play in the snow is so funny. You can’t watch them have a romp and not smile.
Left them home for the next bit and just enjoyed the snow for myself. Spent some time with friends this morning (yeah! babysitter!) and am off this afternoon to take two small children swimming and to grandma’s. (A special request from Tanner, that visit.) Speaking of Tanner, he’s upstairs now, doing anything he can to avoid napping. Time for him to “get up” soon anyway. Ahhh, the joys of 3!

Text from Kim to Beth, 5:22 am: “Look’s pretty cold out there…”
Text from Beth to Kim, 5:23 am: “Wear a coat!”
Text from Kim to Beth, 5:24 am: “I’m coming.”
and it was cold, and our legs were heavy and it was slow. but we did it and i felt better all day because of it.

I’ve been saying that someday, somehow, I would make it up the giant hill on the way up to the Uplands. I live in a hilly neighborhood, but this one’s a whopper. It’s about 3/4 of a mile, with a pretty good grade. I’ve never made it to the top. But today…I did!! And it didn’t even feel that hard. I don’t know what was wrong with me, but I liked it! I kinda felt like the energizer bunny, I just kept going and going…Kim was running post-flight-of-wine, and she kept at it like a trooper. I suspect that my freakish peppiness may have been helpful, but who knows. You know how the runs go, it will be her turn to pull me along tomorrow.
I’m pretty proud of us. We did a solid run in the rain and wind and cold, and we both did it with good spirits. Isn’t that really what running and friends are about?

She’s been demoted from the four mile runs. Truth be told, she’s limping a little more than we’d like and we can’t tell yet if it her paw or a touch of puppy osteoarthritis. She’s going on gentle 1 mile walks, then getting left home for the remainder of the run. (And I have to admit, just running with one puppy is so easy and fun! Kinda like spending a day with just one kid.) The good news is that the running and puppy diet did something-she can jump up into the car independently, something she didn’t do for a year. We’ll see if we’re headed for the vet in the next couple of days.
