My husband’s birthday was back in January. We spent the last two days celebrating his birthday with a trip to Timberline Lodge, a 1937 Lodge at, you guessed it, the Timberline on Mt. Hood. That’s 6,000 feet, for any of you curious folks who haven’t been there. We left the kids with my folks, the puppies at the kennel and took off early Wednesday morning for Oregon. We spent yesterday skiing Timberline, the ski area attached to the lodge. The snow was great, just a few inches of new, light powdery flakes. The terrain….well, on the easier side of skiing. Loads of intermediate runs, which was terrific for me, as it was only my 2nd up of the year. Kirk, however, skis that much in a few days, and he was a touch bored. This morning we headed down the road and spent today at Mt. Hood Meadows. I love that place! There was plenty of intermediate and on-the-easier-side of advanced runs for me, some challenging spots for Kirk, no lines and blue, blue skies. I got me legs under me yesterday, so I actually felt like I was getting better today with more control and speed.I even made it through a few fields of moguls-not pretty every time, but a few good turns thrown in here and there. I haven’t seen Kirk ski yet this year, excluding our slog through the weather at Alpental, and he looked great!
We spent about 5 hours on the slopes each day. My legs are pretty fatigued still, but pleasingly, not sore. The Timberline Lodge was worth the stay as well. We had a great dinner with a glass of Zerba wine-very tasty. I wouldn’t recommend it for little kids, but as a “yeah, we ARE grown-ups” vacation, it was terrific.
Tomorrow, it’s back to running with Kim, then off to pick up the kids and the pups. Loki and Ellie are taking their annual trip to the groomer’s before we pick them up. We usually wash them ourselves, but they are just all kinds of nasty now!

-John Wayne. Or at least that’s what somebody quoted to me at Saturday’s caucus. The turnout was amazing. I think there were about 1000 people stuffed into the local middle school. There were shuttles running between parking lots when the streets and lots overflowed. (Now, by “shuttles” I mean two guys in thier cars driving people around.) The organizer was a very nice, civicely minded senior. God love her for being involved, but I don’t think she was expecting quite the voter turnout. It was a bit biousterous, opinionated and pretty exciting. Everybody who wanted it had a minute to stump for a candidate. I was more of a listener, but people feel strongly this year, that’s for sure! If you’ve never gone to one, I’d recommend it, just to see what it’s like. In the end, Obama carried the state, by something like 60%. In our caucus, he had somewhere between 90 and 95%.
Right, and I cut my Saturday gym class 15 minutes short to get the kids home and go experience democracy in action. It was so worth it!
