I'm a lucky woman who loves her life. I have an amazing husband who makes me laugh and challenges me all at the same time I have two very young, bright, funny, entertaining children and a job I love as a physcial therapist. In my free time, I'm a runner (slow but sure), a hiker, a writer (at least by avocation), and a human jungle gym for my little ones. This is my third 1/2 marathon, along with a couple fulls, but my first foray back into distance running since the two back-to-back little ones. (My running partner's favorite fact about me is that my kids are 363 days apart.) It's also my first attempt at any type of blogging, and I'm basically computer illiterate, so hang in there with me.

Run, walk, but no woozy!

November 19th, 2007 by writeontherun

So I was planning on going to Kim’s EZ8s class tonight, but when I woke up, I had that familiar feeling. That “I’ll feel so much better and have a happier day if I run” feeling. So I headed to the gym, replete with gym daycare, and jumped on the treadmill. I planned on a quick, short run, just to see how I felt. You know what? I felt GOOD! Like a real human having a blast running. Yes, on a treadmill! I kept it slow, running 10 minute miles and gave myself a few walk breaks (thus the pace below) but overall, much improved from yesterday. And the best part is that now, several hours later, I feel terrific! No spins or blurry views of the world. I may not be up to running all of Seattle, but that’s fine. I really just wanted to see the atmosphere in the hometown race. I’ll be ready for Vegas.

Run, walk, woozy.

November 18th, 2007 by writeontherun

Did I mention that I can be stubborn sometimes? Usually when I am convinced that I am able to do, well, basically anything. So when Kim asked if I was sure that I was ready to run, of course, I answerered “yes.” I figured it would be hard, not the best run ever, but I’d make it. It was “only” 12 miles, after all. Then we got about 6 miles in (ok, maybe 5). The world seemed so beautiful, slightly out of focus, like I was looking at it through a gauzy net or rose-colored glasses. “Um, Kim…I’m not so sure I’m going to make it 12 miles. The trees are a little blurry” “Oh, thank god! I’ve been dreading this run!” We alternated between running and walking until we got home, as I (again, of course) made it to about the fartherst spot in the run and then had to get back. Slow, not so steady, but a respectable 9 miles. Um, did I mention that I’m going to run the Seattle 1/2 marathon next Sunday? Just a training run, I’m telling myself and planning on walking the hills.

On a fun note, we did run through National Georgraphic. We stopped and visited Kim’s horse and passed not one, but two herds of elk on the way in and out. One elk tried to stare us down and scare us (ok, me) with his broken antler, but I’ve seen “Open Season” so I’m pretty sure I could have taken him.

Back on the metaphorical horse…sort of

November 17th, 2007 by writeontherun

I didn’t realize just how much this “cold” got me. Several days into my FDA-approved antibiotics (the Mexican ones didn’t work so well, more because of the spectrum than the manufacturing, I suspect) I was feeling better, basically up and around. “Hooray!” I thought. “I will head to the gym for a super pick-me-up and get-me-started again workout.” The whole family went, the kids to the gym’s daycare, my husband to do his thing and me to my favorite class. For 20 minutes. Including the warm-up. Oh. My. God. I felt like I was going to pass out on the floor, or more correctly, on the step. Now, I’m sure that has happened before, but I wasn’t quite ready to be the center of attention in that way. I snuck out, sat for a bit, drank more water. But did I stop there? No, of course not. Why would I keep going, you ask? Because I am a combination of stubborn and stupid….I hopped on the treadmill, planning to walk…which turned into more of a run. The cool thing was I had fun on the treadmill! I was trying out my new orthotics, deciding what we need to modify and they felt great! There are mirrors around the treadmills and I’ve never, never, never in my 15 years of mostly on-again, off-again running seen my gait look normal! The medial knee crashing and the whip at toe off, gone. The downside of this is that when I finished my two miles (see, at least I kept it short!) my hips were shot. Fatigued. Quaking. Let’s hear it for muscular facilitation. Sorry, let me get out of my geeking-out PT mode again. Sooo…the point is, there I was, running and checking myself out in the gym mirrors. I’m guessing several people, having no idea that I was looking at my stride, think that I’m a either a narcissist or a lunatic! I also did some abs, not a great idea. That was the point that I remembered that I had, in my brilliance, packed my inhaler into my diaper bag to have it with me last week. I use it almost never, unless I’m sick, then it’s nice to have around. Like a security blanket. So I guess it should have been at home in the diaper bag. But, both bag and inhaler were at home. Sigh. And there my workout ended…an hour in all, not terrible considering the circumstances. I found my husband, who’s comment was, “I think it’s funny that it takes a virus and a sinus infection to get you to do a shorter workout than me. You OK?” Trying for the long run tomorrow….

When 35 minutes feels like…

November 12th, 2007 by writeontherun

…you’re going to fall off the elliptical, you know you’re in trouble. Yes, the elliptical. On a low setting. Yes, only 35 minutes. Glug. Sink. Sick. Yuk. This was my first foray to the gym since last Thursday’s aborted run with Kim. Probably should have waited another day…kudos to Kim for the 11 miles! Next week, I promise.

‘Twas the night before Vegas….

November 7th, 2007 by writeontherun

‘Twas the night before Vegas
and all through the strip,
not a creature was stirring
except dancers, for tips.

The directions were placed
in the lobby with care,
in hopes that the race
would be run clean and fair.

The runners were nestled
all snug in their beds,
while visions of mile-markers
danced in their heads.

And hubby in his boxers
and blanket, well wrapped,
had just tumbled in bed
from a heavy night cap.

When out on the strip
there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed
to see what was the matter.

Away to the window
I flew like a flash,
jumped over the furniture
like a hurdler’s dash.

The moon on the breast
of the hookers below
gave a dubious luster
to the men saying “no”.

When what, to my wondering
eyes should appear,
but a miniature Elvis,
chugging a beer.

With his white satin jumpsuit,
stretched so very taut,
I knew in a moment-
young Elvis, he’s not.

More rapid than eagles,
the Elvises came in a line
and they whistled and shouted
and said it was time!

“Run Blue Man! Run Elvis!
Run Sir Elton John!
Jog tourists! Jog locals!
Jog Celine Dion!

To the top of the hill,
to the top of the strip!
Run all the way,
run away! Please do not trip!”

As dry leaves before
a marathon fly,
when they meet a running shoe
leaping the sky,

so up to the top
of the hotel they flew,
with an arm full of numbers
and pins and chips, too.

And then in a twinkling,
I heard on the roof,
A belch and a burp
that were not very couth.

As I drew in my head,
and was turning around,
down the fire escape Elvis
came, iridescent and round.

He was dressed all in spandex,
from his head to his foot,
and his shoes were all covered
in ashes and roots.

A bundle of goodies
he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler
just opening his pack.

His eyes how they twinkled,
his dimples how merry.
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry.

His droll little mouth
was smiling bright,
and the roll at his belly
was pasty and white.

The stump of a ciggy
he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke, it encircled
his head like a wreath.

“I’m Elvis, the Las Vegas
Marathon Fairy.
I come bearing gifts.
I don’t mean to be scary.”

He was chubby and plump,
a jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him,
in spite of myself.

A wink of his eye
and a twist of his hand,
and I saw his wrist covered
by a LiveStrong band.

“You’ve got to run hard.
You’ve got to run long.
My friends and I hope
to entertain you in song.

Now take your bib number
and fasten it tight.
Then down to the start line,
your run is in sight!”

Then he sprang to the landing,
to his friends gave a whistle,
and they tumbled downstairs
like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim,
‘ere he stumbled away,
“Good luck with the run!
It will be over one day!”

Now that’s more like it

November 5th, 2007 by writeontherun

Looking for a change, I took a kick-boxing class this morning. Never tried one before, although I’ve been in classes that do a little of this and a little of that, with some kick-boxing included. First of all, it was so fun! Totally different from running, I had to stabilize and kick, punch, lunge and turn. It wasn’t nearly the cardiovascular challenge of long-distance running, but I sure used my glutes, abdominals and quads in a new and challenging way. Throw in the 30 minutes of strength training and Pilates based abdominals, and I’m one fatigued and happy woman. Kinda guessing that my “blahs” were the result of my previously mentioned training fatigue. As much as I like it, running gets boring….tomorrow’s a day off, as my daughter’s having a little surgery. Talk to you in a few days.

A two-for-one crappy run

November 4th, 2007 by writeontherun

(Can I put that in a titile? It’s not a very family-friendly phrase!) Anyway….I guess it’s inevitable that during continued training for a distance run in Seattle, there will be some rainy days. There will also be some challenging runs. We got both today. Two miles in, with soaked feet, a soaked head and tired legs, I was shot. Only 8.5 to go….It got better when the rain stopped and the trail dried out. Also, not such a fan of running downhill for a long time. All that eccentric quad work gets me tired quickly. The run felt much better to me once it leveled off, but I can’t really call any of it “a great run”. On another two-for-one note, Kim struggled too. (At least my feet aren’t covered in blisters. The lessons: high heels, bad deals.) We made it, increased milage and all. I’d love to tell you that I’m feeling terrific now, but the truth is I’m still dragging! We’re off to a movie now. (Kids are spending a few hours with grandma!)

Usually this class is a pick-me up

November 3rd, 2007 by writeontherun

But today, not so much. Again, by “pick-me up”, I mean that in a non-”late night at a dive bar” kind of way. And a non-”how many bad lines do you know” way. (I really need to work on my titles.) Anyway, it still felt good to be doing something, but it wasn’t my usual “yippee! it’s class” feeling. Sigh. Probably has something to do with the sick husband, extra day of work and new schedule. Took the kids swimming afterwards, which was fun. And by swimming, I mean 15 minutes of paddling around and kicking and 15 minutes of sitting on the top step of the hot tub, watching the lifeguards and other kids with fun noodles.
