I'm a lucky woman who loves her life. I have an amazing husband who makes me laugh and challenges me all at the same time I have two very young, bright, funny, entertaining children and a job I love as a physcial therapist. In my free time, I'm a runner (slow but sure), a hiker, a writer (at least by avocation), and a human jungle gym for my little ones. This is my third 1/2 marathon, along with a couple fulls, but my first foray back into distance running since the two back-to-back little ones. (My running partner's favorite fact about me is that my kids are 363 days apart.) It's also my first attempt at any type of blogging, and I'm basically computer illiterate, so hang in there with me.

How do you taper if you feel lousy without exercise?

November 23rd, 2007 by writeontherun

This is the dilemma that I face. If I take a couple days off, I’m grumpy and antsy, and my whole family would probably like to disown me. If I don’t, I’ll run, run, run and then crash at the race. I’m shooting for a happy medium, so I took a step class this morning. Tomorrow I’ll pick up the chip and Sunday morning be ready to go, very bright and very early. Still planning for a nice run/walk. My husband and kids will meet me at the finish line, so I’m excited for that. I’ve never had anybody in my family meet me at the finish of a long race. Although my husband did meet me for a five-K by our house and I had my daughter in the jogging stroller. She slept the whole way. Easiest race she’s ever run!

If you don’t have high expectations for the “race” then you don’t really need to taper… just treat the race like a normal exercise day. There’s nothing wrong with that approach.

Some people are happier just exercising everyday. I know that I’d prefer to exercise everyday. And only because I’m trying to run really fast (and qualify for Boston) am I really taking taper seriously… But if I had my choice I’d ride my bike or run everyday.
