I'm a lucky woman who loves her life. I have an amazing husband who makes me laugh and challenges me all at the same time I have two very young, bright, funny, entertaining children and a job I love as a physcial therapist. In my free time, I'm a runner (slow but sure), a hiker, a writer (at least by avocation), and a human jungle gym for my little ones. This is my third 1/2 marathon, along with a couple fulls, but my first foray back into distance running since the two back-to-back little ones. (My running partner's favorite fact about me is that my kids are 363 days apart.) It's also my first attempt at any type of blogging, and I'm basically computer illiterate, so hang in there with me.

‘Twas the night before Vegas….

November 30th, 2007 by writeontherun

‘Twas the night before Vegas
and all through the strip,
not a creature was stirring
except dancers, for tips.

The directions were placed
in the lobby with care,
in hopes that the race
would be run clean and fair.

The runners were nestled
all snug in their beds,
while visions of mile-markers
danced in their heads.

And hubby in his boxers
and blanket, well wrapped,
had just tumbled in bed
from a heavy night cap.

When out on the strip
there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed
to see what was the matter.

Away to the window
I flew like a flash,
jumped over the furniture
like a hurdler’s dash.

The moon on the breast
of the hookers below
gave a dubious luster
to the men saying “no”.

When what, to my wondering
eyes should appear,
but a miniature Elvis,
chugging a beer.

With his white satin jumpsuit,
stretched so very taut,
I knew in a moment-
young Elvis, he’s not.

More rapid than eagles,
the Elvises came in a line
and they whistled and shouted
and said it was time!

“Run Blue Man! Run Elvis!
Run Sir Elton John!
Jog tourists! Jog locals!
Jog Celine Dion!

To the top of the hill,
to the top of the strip!
Run all the way,
run away! Please do not trip!”

As dry leaves before
a marathon fly,
when they meet a running shoe
leaping the sky,

so up to the top
of the hotel they flew,
with an arm full of numbers
and pins and chips, too.

And then in a twinkling,
I heard on the roof,
A belch and a burp
that were not very couth.

As I drew in my head,
and was turning around,
down the fire escape Elvis
came, iridescent and round.

He was dressed all in spandex,
from his head to his foot,
and his shoes were all covered
in ashes and roots.

A bundle of goodies
he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler
just opening his pack.

His eyes how they twinkled,
his dimples how merry.
His cheeks were like roses,
His nose like a cherry.

His droll little mouth
was smiling bright,
and the roll at his belly
was pasty and white.

The stump of a ciggy
he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke, it encircled
his head like a wreath.

“I’m Elvis, the Las Vegas
Marathon Fairy.
I come bearing gifts.
I don’t mean to be scary.”

He was chubby and plump,
a jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him,
in spite of myself.

A wink of his eye
and a twist of his hand,
and I saw his wrist covered
by a LiveStrong band.

“You’ve got to run hard.
You’ve got to run long.
My friends and I hope
to entertain you in song.

Now take your bib number
and fasten it tight.
Then down to the start line,
your run is in sight!”

Then he sprang to the landing,
to his friends gave a whistle,
and they tumbled downstairs
like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim,
‘ere he stumbled away,
“Good luck with the run!
It will be over one day!”

Sorry to those who have read this already, but I hope you enjoyed it. I thought it deserved a replay, as it’s actually now going to be the night before Vegas. See you there!

Sympathy puking?

November 29th, 2007 by writeontherun

When the phone rings at 5:20 on a day Kim and I are supposed to run at 5:30, it’s never good news. “Beth, I’m throwing up. Gotta go.” Poor thing! I, of course, am not motivated to run alone at that time, and snuggled straight back into bed. I did poke my husband. “Hey, Kirk, Kim’s sick. Wanna go to the gym?” “Nnyah…” I took that as a no. Several hours later, I hopped on the dreaded treadmill for the last time before Vegas, baby. And had a good run! What a difference the ability to eat makes! A nice, 3 mile tempo run (hey, slow for some of you is tempo for me!) and I was like a leaping gazelle on the treadmill. A leaping gazelle full of chicken and asparagus and long grain and wild rice. Can we have that for our last meal before the next run?

Help! I’m struggling…

November 28th, 2007 by writeontherun

The good news is that it must have been a bug of some kind that flattened me for the half marathon through hell. The bad news is that I’m having some pretty serious trouble eating still, without my stomach revolting. I’m pretty sure that there is, in the words of my 3 year old, a mean monster in my stomach that twists and turns and breaths fire when I try most foods. As a result, here’s what I’ve gotten down since Saturday morning (it’s Wednesday night): 1/2 bowl of plain pasta, 1 yogurt, 1 bowl of corn flakes (not a good experience), 1/2 bowl of raisin bran, 1 bananna, and, cursed addiction, some milk and coffee mixed pretty equally (which was the best of the bunch, ironically). And more gatorade and water than I want to think about. This is not what I would suggest for a pre-13 mile run diet. So I went to run today, because as long as I’m not eating anything, I feel reasonably ok. It wasn’t a terrible 3 miles, but it was slow and I could sure tell at the end that I didn’t feel right. Let’s just say that the idea of adding 10 miles on wasn’t all that appealing. Sigh. I’m hoping for a terrific dinner tonight, a miracle recovery and a great run tomorrow morning. I’m in need of the great run because, as you can well imagine, my confidence is plummeting along with my weight.

Back to my roots

November 26th, 2007 by writeontherun

Still reeling a bit from the half marathon of evil, I wanted to exercise today, but…no running! I decided to jump back in the pool, and I realized just how great it was to be in. I put in some decent yardage, considering the months going without swimming (unless you count many repetitions of Captain Kangaroo with my kids). My form was, well, not it’s strongest, but then, I’ve never been a form swimmer. I had a Janet Evans stroke, for those of you who recognize that. Call it a windmill. Coaches tried to change it for a while, and now it’s just a crazy half-breed of traditional stroke and straight-armed wildness. Anyway, I hopped in, warmed up with a 750 or so, did some IM work and a set of descending 50s on the :60, :55, :50, kicked a bit and warmed down. I was aiming for 2000, so I’m pretty pleased that it was comfortable and fun. My butterfly was even tolerable, for short distances. (If I could compete as an 8-and-under in the 25 fly, I’d be a rock star!) So I’m in a much better mood. It was nice to feel fluid today after yesterday’s slog. On a side note, this is the first post I’ve ever had for swimming. The swim pace is pretty funny. I’ve never thought of a pace per 100 yards, what with sets and stroke work and kicking. Any other way to record it, short of putting my whole workout in here, yard for yard?

Seattle 1/2 Marathon. Brutal. Just Brutal.

November 25th, 2007 by writeontherun

The plan: Run the first 9 or 10 miles, then do a jog/walk for the rest. Enjoy the view. Have fun.

The reality: How do I say this politely? Ran the first 3. Stopped, waited in line for the porta-potty. Ran the next 2. Stopped, waited in line for the porta-potty. The easiest way to describe this run would be to tell you that it was a tour of the Honey Buckets. On a positive note, the nice race planners placed them every mile. That’s 9 Honey Buckets I visited. This was not a pleasant run. I ran through the 7th mile, and from there on out, it was all I could do to stay upright. In all my runs and all of my races, however slow I’ve gone, I’ve never before wanted to walk to a medic and say, “That’s it. I’m done. Take me off the course.” I wanted to do that today. But I didn’t! I finished the 1/2 Marathon run/walk/slog/doubled over moving in a somewhat forward direction. And hey, in the moments that I noticed it, it’s a very pretty course. I’m going to lie back down now.

Just a little pre-1/2 gym.

November 24th, 2007 by writeontherun

And, I was late to the class I wanted to take, so I just hung on the elliptical and the bike for a bit. That’s just an excuse to read a book, really. Which I did.

How do you taper if you feel lousy without exercise?

November 23rd, 2007 by writeontherun

This is the dilemma that I face. If I take a couple days off, I’m grumpy and antsy, and my whole family would probably like to disown me. If I don’t, I’ll run, run, run and then crash at the race. I’m shooting for a happy medium, so I took a step class this morning. Tomorrow I’ll pick up the chip and Sunday morning be ready to go, very bright and very early. Still planning for a nice run/walk. My husband and kids will meet me at the finish line, so I’m excited for that. I’ve never had anybody in my family meet me at the finish of a long race. Although my husband did meet me for a five-K by our house and I had my daughter in the jogging stroller. She slept the whole way. Easiest race she’s ever run!

In the words of Depeche Mode,

November 22nd, 2007 by writeontherun

Enjoy the silence! I ran this morning, all alone. Don’t get me wrong, I love running with Kim and run regularly because she is there. When I’m not running with Kim, I’m running at the gym with 20 other people present and one eye open for the daycare staff, in case my kids need me.  This morning, my husband ran first while I watched the kids. After a few miles (hooray for him, he’s turning into a runner too! He even bought his first real pair of running shoes last week. Shoes that he bought for fit and performance, not for “they looked good at the outlet mall.” I’m very proud!) he came back, and off I went into the chilly air. Covered by all the cold weather running gear I could find and gloves, I jogged through the neighborhood and around the town. It was the perfect cold, crisp, sunny, quiet morning that I love. There was nobody around as they were probably all planning turkey feasts and making stuffing. The mountains were snow-capped and the view was stunning. To tell the truth, I never got into a comfortable running rhythm, but I still enjoyed the few minutes of time stolen for myself. Happy Thanksgiving, all.

Aren’t I supposed to be the one who trips?

November 21st, 2007 by writeontherun

I mean, I’m kind of known for it. I admit to being clumsy. Really clumsy. So it was a little funny (sorry Kim!) to see Kim tripping a few times while I kept my footing. That said, I think I was still giddy from the fact that running feels so much better when I can breath! Let’s see if I can reinact the sound effects from the morning….”oof.” “oops.” “what!?” “ouch.” Sadly, the ouch led to a bit of a walk, so I’m hoping Kim’s recovering well. I ran the last mile, as I often do, with two very poorly behaved puppies. They’re not always poorly behaved, but today???? They chased a cat. They chased a dog. They tried to chase a kid going to the bus stop. And Loki, who lives up to her name, LOVES to play in the frost and snow and ice and crunchy leaves, so she was just all kinds of puppy excited and all over the place.
